SATURDAY

Go gourd crazy

Join presenter Pat Harris (sponsored by the Friends of Coronado State Monument) as he teaches guests how to craft holiday ornaments from buffalo gourds with Native American or Hispanic designs (or make up your own design).

Two gourds are issued per participant. Make one to trim the Monument’s Christmas tree. The second one is yours to keep. Provided materials include prepared buffalo gourds, decorations, paints and feathers.

Two classes take place, one from 10 a.m. to noon and another from 1 to 3 p.m. Reservations are required (adults/children age 7 years or older). Call 822-8571 for your preferred time, reservation and to guarantee your necessary materials.

Cost is $10 per person or $20 for family (limit 5 family members) for adults and children age 7 years and older.

Coronado State Monument is off US 550, west of Bernalillo, located at 485 Kuaua Rd., just before the Phillips 66.

Book signing

New Mexico children’s author and librarian Vaunda Micheaux Nelson will autograph her two new books at Hastings in Rio Rancho from 4 to 6 p.m.

In “Who Will I Be, Lord?” a young girl thoughtfully considers her family tree and the vibrant ancestors who populate it. As each family member’s story is revealed, her quiet meditation — about what kind of person she’ll be when she grows up — transforms into a testament to the importance of sharing family stories. “Bad News for Outlaws: the Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, Deputy U.S. Marshal,” reveals the story of an amazing African American hero of the Old West.

Roadrunner Project

The Esther Bone Memorial Library will host a presentation on the Roadrunner Project at 11 a.m.

The Roadrunner Project is a 3-year-old, ongoing mission to study and photograph roadrunners in an urban setting. Sarah Bonneau is the photographer and coordinator of this endeavor. Bonneau studied photography at California State University, Northridge, and has been a photographer for more than 30 years. This is her first major-themed project. Bonneau has over 10,000 images to date and has created a slide show of 200 images for the presentation. Signed roadrunner fine art prints will be available for sale following the program.

This program is free and no prior sign-ups are required. The library is located at 950 Pinetree Rd. SE in Rio Rancho. For more information, stop by the library, or call 891-5012, ext. 3128.
