THURSDAY

Wild things here

You’ve seen the movie “Where the Wild Things Are” (or not), but the book has been thrilling children for years. Young “wild things” are invited to meet at the Loma Colorado Main Library at 4:30 p.m. to celebrate the book that started it all. There’ll be “terrible” taste treats, rumpus music, a truly wild craft, and more. If you must gnash your teeth, do it at the library. For more information, call the Youth Services Desk at 891-5013, ext 3032.

Chautauqua

Meet Miss Laura Gilpin, photo-grapher, as portrayed by Deborah Blanche, New Mexico actor and storyteller, in this one-woman show, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Loma Colorado Main Library Auditorium, 755 Loma Colorado Dr. Blanche will show slides of some of Gilpin’s most famous photographs and tell behind-the-camera stories of her life and work.

In this program, Blanche presents Miss Gilpin as she was in the year 1954 — a confident and ebullient woman in her early 60s. Along with the dramatization will be 30 pristine images of her work, made available by arrangement with the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.

Gilpin was a native Westerner, a professional photographer who mastered the techniques of landscape, portrait, still life, commercial, documentary, and aerial photography, as well as the principal, extant methods of printmaking. She packed in her equipment on horseback to photograph the source of the Rio Grande, did studio portraits for society matrons, and flew low to capture the light and shadows on Shiprock from every possible angle. In addition, she published several books.

Blanche has been creating one-woman shows and Chautauqua programs since the mid-1970s. This program is made possible by the New Mexico Humanities Council. Admission is free; no tickets or registration required. For information, call 891-5013, ext. 3033.
