The first-year Cleveland High School girls soccer team received the third seed for the Class 5A state soccer tournament, while Rio Rancho’s boys and girls teams each received the 5 seed.

The Cleveland boys team, which finished its inaugural season with a .500 mark (9-9) and upset West Mesa 1-0 in its regular-season finale to finish 3-5 in District 1-5A, was left out.

Both Rio Rancho teams play first-round games at Rio Rancho Stadium this weekend; Cleveland’s girls have a bye into the quarterfinals.

The 1-5A runner-up Rio Rancho girls (11-6, 6-2) play host to 12th-seeded Hobbs (12-8) Saturday morning at 11. The Rams beat the Eagles 5-0 in their last meeting, a state quarterfinal game last season.

Awaiting the Rams-Eagles winner in the quarterfinals is Las Cruces, which beat the Rams 1-0 in both teams’ opener.

The five-time 1-5A champion Rams boys (15-4, 7-1) entertain 12th-seeded Albuquerque High (10-10) Saturday afternoon at 1. The Rams and Bulldogs haven’t met on the pitch since the 2001 season, when AHS was in its second and final season as a 1-5A member. The Bulldogs won the first meeting, 1-0, and the Rams won the second game, 3-1.

Awaiting the Rams-Bulldogs winner in a quarterfinal game is Mayfield, a 2-1 winner over the visiting Rams on Oct. 1

The 1-5A champion Storm girls (18-1, 8-0) await the winner of the Carlsbad (19-1) vs. Valley (10-8-1) in a quarterfinal game on Nov. 5 at the APS soccer complex.

In other first-round games for the girls, No. 7 Cibola faces No. 10 Albuquerque High Friday at the APS soccer complex at 6 p.m. On Saturday, No. 8 Eldorado plays host to No. 9 Mayfield at the APS soccer complex and No. 6 Carlsbad entertains No. 11 Valley.

Earning first-round byes were defending state champ Sandia, the No. 1 seed; No. 2 seed La Cueva, No. 3 Cleveland and No. 4 Las Cruces.

In other first-round boys games, No. 9 Highland visits No. 8 Las Cruces Friday; No. 11 West Mesa visits No. 6 Gadsden and No. 10 Hobbs entertains No. 7 Cibola on Saturday.

Earning first-round byes were defending state champ La Cueva, the No. 1 seed; No. 2 seed Sandia, No. 3 Eldorado and No. 4 Mayfield.
