There were several “firsts” for Cleveland High School’s football team Friday night: The Storm posted their first win at their new stadium, 19-6, over visiting Gallup; posted their first victory over a District 1-5A foe and beat a Class 5A team for the first time in three tries.

What wasn’t a first was junior running back Iseha Conklin turning in another solid performance, to the tune of 230 rushing yards on 28 carries, including two touchdown runs.

Another junior, quarterback Travis Lonergan, ran the offense well, guiding the Storm to a 65-yard, seven-play drive in the second quarter, capped by Conklin’s 12-yard run to paydirt, and an 80-yard, six-play drive, culminating in a 1-yard run by Conklin in the third quarter; it was his 20th TD of the season.

The Storm (5-3, 1-1) got on the scoreboard first, not long after official opening ceremonies were conducted on the field, when the Bengals (1-8, 0-3) coughed up the ball in the Cleveland end zone, where sophomore Chris Rasband fell on it for a TD.

James Beasley’s point-after was blocked, and the Storm led, 6-0.

Gallup scored what turned out to be its only touchdown on a 63-yard, 12-play drive, capped by QB Steven Summy’s 2-yard run into the end zone.

The PAT was blocked and the score was knotted at 6-all.

Cleveland’s second TD of the first half came right after the Bengals scored, with Conklin carrying the ball on the final four plays of the drive, covering, respectively, 3, 4, 20 and 12 yards. Beasley’s PAT gave CHS a 13-6 lead.

Tyler Smith intercepted a Summy pass to end Gallup’s first possession of the second half, and Lonergan, 5 of 9 passing for 63 yards, basically handed the ball off to Conklin and Adam Grau, who contributed a 29-yard run on the final scoring drive of the game. After Conklin went in from the 1, the game’s scoring ended with 5:36 remaining in the third period.

Gallup, losing for the seventh time in Rio Rancho in as many trips, ran only four plays on the Storm’s side of the field in the second half.
