Wrestling superstars come to Star CenterThe superstars of TNA (Total Nonstop Action) wrestling are invading Santa Ana Star Center Friday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Adelmann hefting againTeale Adelmann of Rio Rancho was in Cleveland earlier this month, where she won the nationals to secure a place on the world bench press team.
Adelmann set a national record last weekend in Gallup, where she competed at a regional meet in Gallup and set an American record — again — with a 281-pound bench press.
Adelmann weighed 123 pounds when she benched 253 pounds at the IPF Bench Press World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic, and took home the gold medal for Team USA in 2008.
See the Lobos howlThe University of New Mexico basketball teams will be in Rio Rancho on Oct. 16 for their first official practices.
Those sessions, which will give UNM hoops fans a chance to see the 2009-10 teams, will take place at Santa Ana Star Center, will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
The UNM women’s basketball team ended its 2008-09 season at the Star Center, winning two and losing one of three WNIT games played in Rio Rancho earlier this year.
Want to try out for the Thunderbirds?The Albuquerque Thunderbirds have announced dates for the team’s open tryouts for the 2009-10 season.
The team will be holding open tryouts for the upcoming NBA Development League season on Oct. 17-18 in Albuquerque and Oct. 24-25 in the Dallas area.
The Albuquerque tryout will be held at Albuquerque High School; the Dallas tryout will be held at Frisco Field House in Frisco, Texas. Check-in and late registration for both tryouts will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, with the tryouts beginning at 9 a.m. Players will run through drills and scrimmages until approximately 3 p.m. each day.
The Thunderbirds’ tryouts give prospective players the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of head coach John Coffino and the rest of the team’s coaching staff. Participants will compete to earn an invitation to the team’s training camp, which will begin in early November.
Applicants can pre-register by submitting the official registration, disclosure and release forms, in addition to a $125 non-refundable fee by Oct. 14. The fee for day of registration will be $150. Payments must be made by money order or cashier’s check, or cash on the day of. Application forms are available at abqtbirds.com.
High school championship tickets on saleFans will be able to purchase tickets online in advance of selected New Mexico Activities Association state championship events during the 2009-10 school year through an agreement reached recently between the NMAA and TicketLeap.
The service will initially be offered only in selected sports during 2009-10, but will be expanded to other sports in the future.
“TicketLeap is proud to partner with the NMAA as its exclusive online ticketing provider,” said Mike Vaughan, vice president of business development at TicketLeap. “Together, we will provide convenience and accessibility for NMAA fans, families and friends to purchase tickets online for the first time.”
It is anticipated that the 2009 state soccer championships will be the first state championship to utilize TicketLeap, but expansion is expected to the point where the service is offered for other NMAA championships. Availability of the service will be through the nmact.org.
