The cupcakes have been consumed.

Now it’s time for the Cleveland High football team to get into the meaty portion of its schedule. A trio of Class 4A teams, two of which were in the playoffs in 2008, awaits the Storm (2-0) over the next four weeks.

The Storm won handily for the second week in a row Thursday night at Rio Rancho Stadium, where junior tailback Iseha Conklin ran for 224 yards on 12 carries and scored four first-half touchdowns en route to a 48-14 victory over Class 3A Miyamura High of Gallup.

Trevor Colter hangs onto a first-half reception. He caught three passes, including one for a TD in the lopsided victory Thursday evening.

“I think for the first time all year, we’re going in as the underdog,” CHS coach Kirk Potter said of his team’s game with Class 4A Volcano Vista Thursday evening at 7 at Milne Stadium.

“That alone will be enough to take any wind out of our sails. We’d better get down to business or we won’t be able to stay in that game.

“We know that they’re a year ahead of us,” he said, referring to the Hawks playing a varsity schedule last season.

The Hawks, ranked sixth in the first coaches poll of the season, opened their season with a 35-22 victory over Highland on Aug. 29. Matt Sandoval gained 271 all-purpose yards to lead Volcano Vista, which plays in District 6-4A this season, to the victory.

Sandoval put himself in the state record books last fall when he carried the ball 35 times for 382 yards and scored six TDs in a game against Valley last season, so he’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

The Hawks faced Albuquerque High Friday night. That score was not available at press time.

Next year’s meeting with Volcano Vista will mean more: The Storm and Hawks will be rivals in District 1-5A, along with Cibola and Rio Rancho. Gallup drops to 4A and West Mesa moves into District 5-5A.

Offensively, Conklin was finished after the first half, which ended with CHS leading 41-0.

That paved the way for a running clock via the 35-point mercy rule. CHS was enjoying a 48-0 lead with 7:34 to go in the third quarter, and the Patriots posted their TDs in the final 14 minutes.

Cleveland took the opening kickoff and marched 54 yards in six plays, with Conklin scoring from four yards out for a 6-0 lead. Andy Smith shanked the point-after.

Miyamura then went three and out and punted.

Cleveland then drove 55 yards in five plays, capped by a 35-yard scoring strike from starting quarterback Travis Lonergan to Trevor Colter. Smith tacked on the PAT this time to make it 13-0.

Miyamura managed to get two first downs on its next possession, which ended with a punt of 53 yards, giving CHS the ball on its own 17.

No problem. Lonergan handed the ball to Conklin, who weaved his way through the Patriots’ defense, stepped out of a tackle or two, and went the distance. Smith’s PAT made it 20-0.

Cleveland didn’t turn the ball over, while the Storm recovered two Patriots’ fumbles and lineman Ted Bency intercepted an Arviso pass.

Miyamura came up short on a fourth-down call on its next possession and Cleveland capped its next possession with a 40-yard jaunt by Conklin. Smith’s extra point made it 27-0.

The second quarter saw a 17-yard scoring run by Conklin and a 5-yard TD pass from Lonergan to Matthew Romero, each topped by Smith PATs, for a 41-0 edge at intermission. Cleveland scored on its first six possessions of the opening half, and had the ball again when it ended.

Garrett Hayes, seemingly having more fun on defense than under center so far, gave the Storm a 47-0 lead when he hooked up with Jerome Gabryszewski on an 8-yard TD pass on Cleveland’s first possession in the second half. Smith booted the PAT for 41-0.MHS quarterback Kevin Arviso, sacked three times by game’s end, spoiled the shutout on a 1-yard run late in the third period.

With 7:29 left in the game, Arviso threw a 34-yard TD pass to Patrick Trujillo, and the Patriots added a two-point conversion for the game’s final points.

Martin Vaughn also saw time at QB for Cleveland in the game. Lonergan finished 8 of 15 passing for 100 yards and a TD. Colter was Lonergan’s favorite target, hauling in three passes, including the TD, covering 50 yards.

“I think we’re in good shape at quarterback,” Potter said. “I wanted to get Garrett some more time, but I just wasn’t ready to play those starters in the second half. … (and) Marty’s really a pretty good quarterback.”
