They came. They saw. They ogled.

Some even said they would like to have the chance to go back to high school.

“They” were touring the brand-new Cleveland High School, less than 48 hours before it’d be alive with freshmen through juniors, last Saturday.

Here’s what some of them said about the new facility:

— “It is absolutely amazing. It is a place for children to engage. It’s top-of-the-line technology. I’m talking to young people who are excited about being here.” — Myra Roosevelt, Lincoln Middle School principal.

— “Much beyond what I expected. It really is very nice.” — Terry Hibler, JCPenney manager.

— “This is one of the most beautiful buildings I have seen in my lifetime. I mean, I have been in enough schools that have graduated some wonderful people, but this is absolutely unbelievable, it really is. The architecture, the facilities, I’m sure the staff is comparable to the building — that, I’m not worried about. But this is something that this city will be extremely proud of and any citizen in this city should take the time to come here and look at it, even if it’s only the outside, because the kids of this city are in for a big treat.” — Tony Popper, former city councilor.

— “It is just an amazing school. I was on the planning committee and what’s so nice to see is the great job they did at pulling the best of what we saw all around the country and making it happen here. Just walking through, I see so many of those aspects. Like the lighting, for example. We kept talking about natural light, natural light. They did an amazing job. It’s to be envied, that’s for sure.” — Lisa Dobson, former Mid-High principal.

— “This has turned out to be a fantastic project, just like we expected from the design. I just hope that we have fantastic outcomes coming out of this and there is a healthy rivalry in the district.” — Divyesh Patel, school board member.

— “It’s massive, beautiful, and I think once you have students in it, it’ll be even more beautiful.” — Tony Anastasi, resident.

— “It’s an outstanding facility. It almost makes me wish to go back to high school … but not quite. I think if we’d had a facility like this when I was going to high school, I’d probably have been a lot smarter.” — Kathy Colley, city councilor.

— “Wow. What a wonderful addition to our community.” — Debbi Moore, executive director, Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce.

— “It is incredible, It just a beautiful school and what an asset for our community.” — Noreen Scott, executive director, Rio Rancho Economic Development Council.

— “I think it’s gorgeous. It’s state of the art, nicer than college campuses I’ve seen. It’s just beautiful.” — Karla Walker, former school board member.

— “The new campus is a good example of how we can engage our kids and try to make them proud to come to a school that they feel part of. I think what it does is talk about bringing an environment that is good for learning, as well as the curriculum and, hopefully, what you are going to see as our school continues is less dropouts and less truancy because kids are going to be proud to come here.” — Tom Swisstack, Rio Rancho mayor.

— “I’ll tell you what, this is state of the art. This is an outstanding place — I’d even like to go to school again. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a facility this fantastic. It’s got everything that you need to come out of here and get in business or go to college. I can’t wait for that first football game between V. Sue Cleveland High and the Rio Rancho Rams.” — Jack Thomas, state representative.

— “When I moved to Rio Rancho, I knew you guys were the best. This is a demonstration of it.” — Larry Naranjo, city councilor.

— “My impression is it’s exactly what it should be: a leader. Rio Rancho’s always been known for excellence in academics, and I think this sets the bar just at the right level. The way it’s been designed, the way it’s been laid out, I think the students are going to absolutely be put in the best environment possible, for them to learn, which will help them succeed as they go through life.” — Bob Gallagher, president of New Mexico Oil and Gas Association, parent of a CHS student.

" Don't know what all the fuss is about, the school isn't full yet, no seniors, yet they haven't enough of anything. they haven't enough lockers for the kids, or chairs or books, or classes the kids want to take, they certainly haven't gotten their priorities right. Whats the point of light switches that turn on when you walk into the classroom, this won't help with the education. "

" Really? Rio Rancho Parent? really?
You should bitter, jealous, and completely uniformed. Stop Complaning and try to be positive. "

Gary wrote on Aug 25, 2009 9:13 PM:

" Regarding "Rio Rancho Parent" - There is always someone who feels the need to bring something negative. I question if you are really a parent for starters. It's a new school!!! While APS struggles to graduate kids and build schools RR graduates kids and builds needed schools. I would say as a parent you don't have your priorities right. If you are a parent I bet it sucks to be one of your kids. "

Karen wrote on Aug 25, 2009 9:50 PM:

" I agreed, The district is so short of funds that they don't want to hire teachers they rather take from the other schools and bring the classroom total up higher so they can show off a fancy building. Priorities are definitly
in the wrong spot. But we couldn't disappoint MS Cleveland could we. "

" You guys have got to be kidding. This school will only be getting better and better. Yes I know that the funds and every other financial aspect of this school aren't exactly in the right place but you have to look into the future for yourself. This school can only be what the community wants it to be. Postive, Beautiful, and filled with staff who care about the students at hand. And the school has already been built, get over it. And to the Rio Rancho Parent. Stop being a Debbie Downer and get real. "

" The new school is awesome! Although, there are still technical issues going on, one must remember that it IS a new school and like every new school that's out there, it'll take awhile for Cleveland to get on their feet. Meanwhile, we should be thankful that our children get to have the opportunity of attending a new, state of the art school. "

" Yeah awesome, awesome waste of our money. Because of this school my daughter has 50 people in her math class, an average of 36 in every class and one class is even being held in the teachers lounge! But hey lets all enjoy the lighted shower floors and monogrammed desks! "

" The tour was great if you were happy to only see the lower level. It looked more like it would be ready in a few months....not a couple of days. Once my son started he said that they cut the lunches to half an hour. So while there is a new beautiful cafeteria...it is short staffed and kids are skipping lunch with all the long lines to get some food. A million$ should have been given to employees instead of all the bells and whistles of the building itself. It's not fair that our children can't even have lunch. "

" to WOW - if you could write correctly and string a sentence together you'd be dangerous and to GARY - yes I am a psrent and my kids get straight A..can you say that about yours??? "

" It's a building that is a waste of money, why don't they put the money to good use. Like hire REAL teachers, and not coaches on Teacher waivers. ( This means they are not real teachers) Oh But I forgot that is what RR does. Last year I found out that my daughter had been taught by a male teacher who after 5 tries had not past his teacher test. I have a feeling this won't be printed and just sweeped under the rug like last year.
a teaching License is open public record if they teach your child. "

" This is to "anon" lets see if you'll still be saying "we should be thankful that our children get to have the opportunity of attending a new, state of the art school. " at the end of the school year, when your children won't have learned anything because they have been taught by substitute teachers, or been taught in overcrowded classrooms. The building is just a building after all. "

CHS Parent of 9th grader wrote on Sep 1, 2009 10:47 PM:

" I saw a comment earlier today about the teacher that does not have a license at CHS and found out that my daughter is in this basketball coaches class. Not a real teacher. Most of the students know that this guy does not have a license. WHY don't the parents? I think a note should be sent home if our children are in a class with a person with a waiver. We paid for a building but not for TEACHERS? This school is not worth my child's education. "

CHS Parent of 3 wrote on Sep 3, 2009 10:33 AM:

" Yes it is true that young man does not have a teaching license. He was the C team coach last year. Because of his use of language I will not let my son play basketball for CHS this year. I can't believe we paid lots of money for a School and we can not pay for REAL teachers? The building is just that. My children s education will follow them for their lives. We should have spent more money on Teachers and not bleachers. "

" To fedupofit, as a student of Cleveland, all of my teachers have taught more at least more than 3 years, and in these few weeks I have been in school, we have learned a lot. True, is it just a building, but I'll have you know that when in some APS schools, there aren't even flags in the classrooms, much less trash cans, you OUGHT to be thankful that my fellow classmates and I can enjoy a new building with everything we need in it. "

STUDENT 2 wrote on Sep 10, 2009 11:18 PM:

" I am also a student at CHS, and I Know that my teachers have not taught more then three years. I have the NON-Teacher and he is very proud of it. I wish I had your teachers. Big deal it's a building. I want to LEARN. "

rio rancho parent wrote on Sep 12, 2009 9:07 AM:

" The its up to you as students or involve your parents into confronting your Principal. If he's employing teachers who are not qualified, then something needs to be done. If you then don't get any satisfaction, go to the district office. Take charge of your education. "

... wrote on Sep 12, 2009 6:58 PM:

" How unappreciative you people are. If we had a horrible building where something was wrong with it, then, the academics wouldn't matter, it would be the "poor environment" we had to send out kids to 5 days out of the week. "

" It is clear that most of the morons who write things in this blog don't know anything about what they write. HA HA.
At least a few CHS students tell the real story at CHS. It's a great place and it is an asset for the community and the district. "
