Rants & Raves

Published on Sunday, August 16, 2009 12:13 AM MDT

“It’s a known fact when Wal-Mart comes to any town, business suffers. There’s enough research to that truth to fill a library. When everyone shops at Wal-Mart, there will eventually be only Wal-Mart. It’s the same principle they use for squeezing their vendors. I will never shop there. The other businesses deserve my money more. Get educated and you will know.”

“I hope you don’t think anything has been fixed with the (school district’s) bus company. Hang on, because here we go again. No one to help answer the phones to give out information or direction as to what bus my child will ride or what time they should meet the bus. I have been trying to call the bus company for two days and school starts this Monday. Good luck, riders.”

“This is a rant about Code Enforcement. It appears that once a person builds something huge in their backyard, against a block wall, oversized and without any permits however illegal, Code Enforcement cannot do anything about the structure. It’s a finished product, and therefore nothing can be done in spite of the fact that it is in violation of city code. It follows Code Enforcement is not a very viable part of Rio Rancho as it seems to be a useless entity without the power to enforce codes.”

" If you didn't get a card at registration with the bus details on, then your child isn't allowed to ride the bus, you must live too near the school. "

" Code enforcement is a total waste of city money, they say things are getting done, yet I have had the same complaint with them for 6 years, yet when I delve into this further, NOTHINGS done. When you tackle them about a problem, they say they are being posted somewhere else, then you get a new person and we end up going in circles again. This is to the city managers....GET SOMEONE WITH BACKBONE WHO CAN TACKLE THESE THINGS HEAD ON, I'M FEDUP OF BEING IGNORED. "

" I agree that nothing has been improved with the changes with the bus system. My son, a middle schooler, was given a pick-up time of 7:50 (bus wasn't there Fri. @ that time)which is 25 minutes before the start of school. No big deal, right? Wrong! The first day with only middle schoolers back in session, his bus didn't arrive at school until 8:15. If I hadn't taken him to school for his first day of middle school, he would have been late. Again, today bus was late again. "

Jeffery I wrote on Aug 18, 2009 8:41 AM:

" Wal-Mart isn’t evil, capitalism isn’t evil, outsourcing and sweat shops arent’ even evil. They are all the natural product of a free market doing what it does best. Wal-Mart is one of the most amazing American success stories ever. A company that was able to find efficiencies in everything they do. Reinvest their profit into smart growth, cut costs where they can, negotiate bulk buying deals with manufacturers. There is a reason why Wal-Mart is the number one retailer in the United States, it is because they are the best at doing what they do, selling us household items at "

" Anytime I'm looking to make a high end purchase like kitchen appliances or TV or stereo equipment, I always make sure the model I am buying is not sold at Wal*Mart. "Bulk Deals from manufacturers" means cheap models that don't last. "

Sam wrote on Aug 19, 2009 12:40 PM:

" In response to Jeffery; to have an ideological agreement with an unrestricted free market economy is one thing. However, sweat shops are not a "natural product" capitalism, they are a natural product of human exploitation. If you want to turn a blind eye to the harm big box stores do to communities, or choose not to believe the facts, shop at Wal-Mart all you want. To say "sweatshops are not evil" is barbaric. Get out of the dark ages. "

Eric wrote on Aug 19, 2009 7:17 PM:

" In many small towns Wal-Mart shoves it's way in and puts all the small businesses in the town out of business. This makes the town's only real employer Wal-Mart. Reminds me of the share cropping days of the old south. Lets review some history. Slaves who where released by their slave owners would often be hired back by the owners. The old slave owners would open shops that their newly hired ex-slaves could spend all their money in. This system of economics essentially re-enslaved the old slaves. Think about it... "

" READY FOR A RIDE3? Then don't wait on RRPS buses. The bus has not picked up my daughter for the past 2 days. I also as have many others been trying to call with no luck. Atleast with Durham, I knew the bus would show, even if it was running a bit late. I think the school running the buses is a great thing, but they need to get somione to run the program that TRULY knows what they are doing. I can't keep calling in to work, cause I am going to be late. "

" Aside from the late and overcrowded buses, do you know how many accidents there have been since the beginning of the year? Way to go Jeff. Good job monitoring your safety staff. Oh that's right, they're driving..and the mechanics...and the dispatcher...and anyone with a CDL. Kudos!!! "

Lilly wrote on Aug 22, 2009 12:55 PM:

" I seem to be having the opposite experience with RRPS taking over the bus service as everyone else. Although I do wonder about the safety and maintenence, the drivers have been friendly and on time every day since school started. Im quite pleased so far. It has been a nice change from other school districts. "

" i know Code Enforcement does try to get issues addressed. I dont believe are current city elected officals back them. After all the semi-truck issue turned in a big laugh and was resolved Mr Naranjo having them plant a tree so the neighborhood wouldn't have to look at the truck. "

Cant Hear wrote on Aug 25, 2009 7:10 PM:

" The Wal-mart at Southern and Unser was allowed to go in and the neighbors did not object. But, know the traffic is so bad on Unser I cant even go in my backyard. I contacted the city and they dont care. All they care about is the gross receipts tax money they get. Dont be fouled if Rio Rancho lets a business go in next to your home. Our elected officals don't care about our quality of life. Just $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ "

" well if you so upset about the phone and not getting any information about the busse why don't you take yourself down to the bus company and volenteer or maybe ask for a job since. well sounds like you can do it better. you should stop and think about how many kids go to school and need the information maybe thats why you can't get through. remember this community is not all about you thats why it called a community "

" Don't buy next to commercial land, or large tracks of residential land. That's homebuying 101. "

Chuck Wilkins wrote on Sep 1, 2009 7:19 AM:

" I can not believe I agree with Realist on something. I must be wrong this time.

Sorry but if you buy a home next to a major street, you should be prepared for commerical to build next to you. Where do expect commerical to build? "

rr school parent wrote on Sep 3, 2009 10:17 AM:

" Sorry, but here we are in the 3rd week of school and I yet again had to go pick up my daughter because 45 min after school ended, there was no bus. No bus and no adult supervision. I realize these are 12-14 yr olds, but this is getting ridiculous. Can't wait for the open house tonight. "

mom wrote on Sep 4, 2009 4:04 PM:

" It's upsetting that the one's left behind are being lumped into the tiny percentage of routes that aren't running efficiently. The time to fix it is now. These are children, not numbers. My child was lost in the afternoon yesterday. Nobody at the school or bus company could tell me where they were. Just another number right? "
