Not wanting to be behind the eight ball, Sandoval County Commissioners are actively looking to find a county manager.

That’s because long-time manager Debbie Hays will be retiring at the end of the year.

The commissioners, on Thursday, whittled the list of candidates from 50 to six.

John Avila, the former city manager for Las Vegas; Stephen Jerge, town manager for Bernalillo; Michael Miller, former CEO of Farmington; William Tallman, former assistant deputy manager for Santa Fe; Philip Rios, Sandoval County public works director and; former Bernalillo County Manager Juan Vigil made the cut.

Sandoval County Commission Chairman Joshua Madalena said the next step is to create an interview panel that will pick a finalist.

With Sandoval County having one of the most diverse populations in the country, Madalena said he wants the panel to reflect the county’s diversity.
