on the airwaves

“Conversations with Mayor Swisstack” airs on RioVision cable channels 15 and 22 for those Rio Rancho residents who are Cable One subscribers. The mayor’s talk show airs each day on channel 15 at 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Channel 22 shows this program each Sunday (6:30 p.m.), Monday (9 a.m.), Wednesday (noon), Friday (8:30 a.m.) and Saturday (9 a.m.).
“It is my hope that residents will find this new show informative and will provide them updates on how the city is addressing their needs,” Swisstack said. “It is my intent that each episode will give residents the opportunity to hear from guests and community stakeholders who are working on the issues and projects that are important to our city.”
Approximately every four weeks, a new episode will begin showing on both cable channels in their regular time slots. In addition, episodes will be posted to the city’s Web site shortly after a new episode debuts on RioVision.
Edit House Productions, LLC is the contracted service provider for the city’s RioVision cable channels. “Conversations with Mayor Swisstack” is directed, produced, and edited by Edit House and RioVision staff.
Not too late to sign up to play basketball
Spots are still available for children to participate in upcoming youth basketball programs offered by the city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.
Little and Bigger Hoopsters is a non-competitive basketball program designed for boys and girls in the first and second grade.
Rio Rancho Rams Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach, Brian Smith, will be coordinating instruction for the sessions. Smith and his staff will use their knowledge of basketball to teach fundamentals and skills that children can utilize as they progress into the city’s basketball league for third through sixth graders.
Registration can be completed by visiting the city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services offices located at Rio Rancho City Hall (3200 Civic Center Circle). The cost is $30 per child, per session.
Classes will be on Saturdays starting Sept. 20 and will continue through Oct. 25, at Enchanted Hills Elementary School. Sessions for first graders (Little Hoopsters) include 8-9 a.m., 9-10 a.m. and 10-11 a.m. Sessions for second graders (Bigger Hoopsters) are 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 12:30-1:30 p.m. For more information, call 891-7230.
Park closure
Haynes Park will be closed to the public on Sept. 27. The closure will extend from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
On this date, the park will be rented for a private function. Haynes Park, located at 2006 Grande Blvd., is maintained and operated by the city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. For more information, call 891-5015.
Advisory Council needs representatives
The United States Postal Service is seeking residents to serve on Rio Rancho’s Postal Consumer Advisory Council (RRPCAC).
The RRPCAC provides a venue for council members to meet with postal representatives to discuss issues as well as provide ideas and suggestions for improving customer satisfaction. The Postal Service also works with council members to promote consumer knowledge of changes to local programs, policies, and procedures.
Applications can be obtained at the Rio Rancho Post Office at 900 Pinetree Road.
Public meeting on Phase II of the Rail Runner
The Mid-Region Council of Governments and the New Mexico Department of Transportation are hosting a public meeting to discuss Phase II of the Rail Runner Express that extends service into Santa Fe.
The meeting is Sept. 24, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The presentation starts at 6 p.m.
The meeting is in the MRCOG building, 809 Copper Ave., NW Albuquerque.
Homework assistance
at the Library
It’s a bird, it’s a plane — no it’s the Homework League. The Homework League, a homework assistance program, will now be available at the Esther Bone Memorial Library beginning Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. Children in grades K-9 are eligible to receive homework tutoring.
The Homework League is a group of dedicated super Rio Rancho High School students. These students are all members of the National Honor Society and volunteer at both the Loma Colorado Main Library and now the Esther Bone Memorial Library. Able to demonstrate long division in a single bound, tutor reading, assist with science fair projects — these heroic tutors can help children master their homework.
Homework assistance will be offered every following Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. throughout the school year. Students who need homework assistance should check in at the Youth Services Desk, Esther Bone Memorial Library, 950 Pinetree Rd.

Chamber to help Presbyterian celebrate 100 years of service
ALBUQUERQE — On Sept. 25, as part of the Centennial Celebration program, the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce will recognize Presbyterian Healthcare Services for being in business for 100 years.
The keynote will be delivered by Mark Thompson, the coauthor of the international bestseller, “Success Built to Last.” He brings two decades of experience as a senior executive, board member, management coach, producer and investor in growing businesses. He will discuss how reaching 100 years in business is a notable achievement and some of the qualities a business must have to reach it.

Blue Star Mothers
Once again, the Rio Rancho Blue Star Mothers are reaching out to Rio Rancho and surrounding communities for help. On Oct. 18, Blue Star families and volunteers will pack approximately 350 boxes of snacks, entertainment and hygiene items for shipment to troops deployed overseas and stateside.
In addition to contributions of miscellaneous items, the Blue Star Moms need financial contributions to cover the cost of postage at $9.95 per box.
“To ensure that no one serving our country is overlooked, we invite the community to submit the names and complete addresses of their loved ones in the military,” said Marla Griffith, chapter president. “This information will be held in strictest confidence,” Griffith continued, “and will be destroyed immediately after the mailing.” Send the required information to cnizio3@yahoo.com.

Garden Magic
The city of Rio Rancho Water Conservation Office and the Sandoval County Master Gardeners are partnering to conduct a series of free gardening classes.
Classes will be Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10. Topics include bees, rainwater harvesting and gardening. For more information, call 896-8737.
