ROSWELL — Senior running back Troy Harris ran for 237 yards and scored four second-half touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough at the Wool Bowl Friday night, as Class 4A’s No. 1 team, Goddard, defeated the 5A Rams, 52-36.

The Rams (2-1) made the game seem closer when they used a 12-play, 72-yard scoring drive on their final possession. But that drive, capped by a 4-yard run by Harris, whittled more than four minutes off the clock and all Goddard (4-0) needed to do was run out the clock.

Harris earlier scored on runs of 38, 1 and 11 yards. He also caught two passes, worth another32 yards, and gained big chunks of yardage on punt and kickoff returns.

Senior Troy Harris was one tired Ram after carrying the ball 30 times, catching two passes, and being used on punts and kickoffs for the Rams.

Unfortunately, junior quarterback Tyler Baker was guilty of four interceptions, one returned for a TD and another that set up a short Rockets drive.

“These kids never folded their tent,” said Rams coach Michael Worley. “Yeah, maybe we lost the game tonight. Maybe we didn’t execute the way we wanted to execute tonight, but these guys … never hung their heads.”

Rockets quarterback David Vega had a field day in the first half, completing 10 of 15 passes, covering 234 yards. Two of the passes were scoring strikes to his favorite receiver, Hobie McClain, covering 70 and 41 yards.

Goddard coughed up the ball near the end zone on its first possession, but the Rams were unable to capitalize on it and went three-and-out.

Returning the Rams punt to the Rio Rancho 41, the Vega-McClain connection covered the distance in one play. Goddard never was tied nor fell behind after that.

Two possessions later, Zach Rogers booted a 37-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.

On their second play from scrimmage after the Rogers trey, Vega again found McClain, who beat Rams defender Victor Reveles and streaked into the end zone for 70-yard TD connection. Jared Martin, who added the extra point on his team’s first two TDs, kicked a 40-yard field goal for a 17-3 Rockets lead.

The Rams came right back, getting all the way to the Goddard 6 before Baker had a pass deflected and intercepted by Vega.

Unable to score or run out the clock, Goddard punted and Reveles returned it to the Rockets’ 21.

Two plays later, Baker hooked up with Zach Hall on a 21-yard TD pass, although when the PAT failed, Goddard held a 17-9 edge at halftime.

Goddard scored three TDs in the third period, when Harris scored his first two.

A 90-yard kickoff return by Greg Ramirez, who’d earlier returned a pick of a Baker pass 20 yards to paydirt, the Rockets held a 45-30 lead.

Baker’s fourth pick led to a 10-yard, two-play drive and an unsurmountable 52-30 lead.
