Eight DWIs apparently was not enough for Alfonso Lopez.

The 36-year-old Rio Rancho man was arrested on suspicion for his ninth DWI on Saturday.

Before being taken into custody, Lopez led Rio Rancho police on a pursuit that ended near the Rio Puerco.

Lopez also is charged with aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, battery upon a police officer, resisting, evading, obstructing an officer, reckless driving, open container, driving without insurance and driving while license is revoked or suspended.

According to Rio Rancho police spokesman John Francis, at 5:07 p.m., Aug. 9, officers went to the area of 901 Unser Boulevard, in reference to a possible intoxicated driver.

The officers saw a Chevrolet pickup truck in front of the Little Caesar’s restaurant and Lopez getting into the truck.

The officers attempted to make a traffic stop in the Wal-Mart parking lot and Lopez sped off west in the parking lot, then turned south onto the crosswalk lanes in front of the Wal-Mart store. Next, Lopez turned west onto Southern Boulevard, speeding away.

Officers saw Lopez aggressively merge, nearly colliding into three vehicles on Southern between Tarpon and Rainbow.

Lopez continued going west-bound at a high rate of speed through the dirtbike trails.

When Officer Rey Zammaron and the officers handcuffed Lopez, Lopez continued resisting and being uncooperative.

Officer Cody Roberts later said he found three open beer cans inside the cab of the pickup.

" 9th DWI arrest, how is this possible? The judges who preside over this individual trials should be charge with "stupidity" and sentenced to life without parole because they are just as guilty as the offender for not imposing harsh penalties, sentences. The time is now to overhaul New Mexico's judicial system and get rid of the useless judges, prosecutors the state has on its payroll. "

" He has been ARRESTED for his ninth DWI. It doesn't say he was convicted of his ninth DWI. That's the thing, sometimes you have to read. "

" What is a 36 year old doing with 8 DWI's? With the jail time this guy should be receiving, it should not be possible for him to have accumulated 9 DWI's.

If you do the math of how much jail time this guy should have received, he must have been getting DWI's since he was 10. This is counting that he got each DWI the day he was released for the previous DWI.

I hope the Observer follows this and reports on the judge's decision. "
