“Caring is Sharing” food drive

Storehouse West is gearing up for another food drive to begin July 30 and run through Aug. 2. With a 10 percent increase in new clients in June, it shows things are really getting tough for people. With the United Way $18,500 grant received in July 2007, Storehouse West was able to give additional milk, eggs, bread, tuna, meat and cereal to families with five or more members. Unfortunately, with other agencies also needing help, United Way gave less to Storehouse West than they have in other years, which means families needs cannot be provided, but there is food for the Senior programs. To make up the difference Storehouse West will be holding the “Caring is Sharing” Food Drive in all three Albertson Food Stores in Rio Rancho. Needed: peanut butter and jelly, tuna, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti pasta, canned fruit, chili, cereal, juices for children, pork and beans and canned meat.

City survey

The City of Rio Rancho is participating in The National Citizen Survey. A random sample of 1,200 Rio Rancho households will be surveyed, asking for feedback on the quality and usefulness of city services.

The survey process will begin on July 21 when those households that have been selected to participate will receive a pre-notification postcard. On July 28 and Aug. 4, surveys will be provided to the United States Postal Service for delivery to households. Residents will need to complete and mail back their surveys using a postage paid envelope that will be provided by August 20. Results of the survey will be provided to the city in late September and will be used as part of the city’s strategic planning process.

The National Citizen Survey is sponsored by the International City/County Management Association in cooperation with the National Research Center, Inc. The questionnaire and survey procedure were designed based on the experience of hundreds of local governments, ranging in size from small to large. Scientific sampling and weighting of the responses in each city ensure accurate and reliable results. More than 200 municipalities in 40 states have participated in The National Citizen Survey over the past eight years including Alamogordo, Bloomfield, Farmington and Taos.

Tax-free holiday

Gov. Bill Richardson has suspended gross receipts taxes for Aug.1-3 as part of the fourth annual Back-to-School Tax Holiday.

Rio Rancho residents pay 6.9375 percent gross receipts tax on goods. That is equivalent to $6.94 on every $100 purchased.

Nontaxable items include: clothing and footwear $100 or less (that are not primarily designed for athletic activity); school supplies such as pens and paper $15 or less that are typically used in a classroom setting; computers $1,000 or less; as well as assorted computer equipment $500 or less. The price limits are for each item — not the total amount spent for all purchases. For example, a family could purchase three computers tax-free as long as each computer did not exceed the $1,000 limit per computer.
