Rants and Raves

“If you haven’t recently visited the refurbished Esther Bone Memorial Library, you are in for a treat! The colorful library is a joy to behold and the staff is eager to help you find books, tapes and appealing programs. Come see for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.”

“Three years ago my sister and I volunteered to have our family reunion in New Mexico.  With the majority living east of the Mississippi we thought it would be small and a snap to organize. When over seventy people had confirmed we started to panic. It would not be feasible to entertain this many relatives in our homes. Our sincerest thanks: to the Rio Rancho Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Tourist Center for all their suggestions and the informational visitor packets. To the Comfort Inn who graciously allowed us the use of their breakfast room for our’ Meet and Greet Party’ and after putting up with the noise and confusion treated us to a complimentary family picture for all that stayed with them. Made us think we had chosen the right people to give our business. To the Elks Lodge 2500 for the good food and excellent staff who worked with us to have an inviting and comfortable meeting place for the Frantz family reunion. Most of all we thank the state of New Mexico. None of our other family reunions could boast of sightings of bears, wild horses, rattlesnakes, and roadrunners on a single weekend.  Couple that with Indian ruins, casinos, caves, mountain hikes, trout fishing, museums, zoo and aquarium, old towns: Albuquerque and in Santa Fe, tram and horse rides and good old New Mexican food. Over a two week period they did as much as possible and went home happy. Couldn’t ask for a better family or a better place to be from. “The Frantz Twins” Sarah Schuetz and Susan Ortwerth

“I was calling about the person who called in about the Star Heights area, saying it looked like a ghetto in New Jersey, and my sympathy goes out to them, when you talk about all the yards with all the junk, weeds, old appliances and cars that don’t run. It’s not only in Star Heights, it’s spreading to the rest of the city like the plague and I don’t see why the mayor hasn’t stepped up with his transition team and addressed the area. On the other hand, maybe some of that stuff you won’t have to worry about because it’ll get dumped way pout there, west of Rio Rancho, which the mayor says he’s going to do something about. But if he doesn’t hire some more code enforcement people or start citing these people in the court, nothing’s going to happen. The ghetto’s going to get bigger.”

“I walk my dog in Rio Rancho every day and I’m really becoming concerned about the number of loose dogs that seem to be running around the city. It’s so heartbreaking to see these animals running in and out of traffic and I wish somebody would do something about it. If you can’t afford a fence, don’t get a dog.”

“I’d like to talk to somebody who’s in charge. I don’t want to talk to a recorder. Who is in charge of Rants and Raves that’s alive? I didn’t think so.”

(Editor’s note: We will be ending the called-in Rants and Raves service soon. Our readers can still send them in by e-mail – the preferred method – by fax, by mail, or in person).

“I think the North Hills Homeowners Association group should stop insulting the residents of North Hills. For the last 20 years, their whole reason for being has been to say that if you don’t have a homeowners association, your front yards will look like your back yards. Now, if there were no dues, their back yards could look better than their front yards do now. Some of those old biddies on the board of directors have been there, I think, or arrived there soon after the Indians were forced off their lands. They should be replaced.”

“To the absolute losers in River’s Edge III who moved away leaving behind your black, male cat, I want to, hopefully, clue you in to the fact that he grieved for you for days and was inconsolable, meowing endlessly and watching for your return. His likely fate would have been to starve, but we did for him that which you would not. We got him neutered and found him a loving, permanent home. You didn’t deserve him! At the least, you could have taken him to the animal shelter.”

“Some facts about nuclear power in the USA: There are more than 70 operating nuclear plants (units) scattered around the country.  Half of these are on sites with multiple units, many with space to add up to four more.  All are licensed, the operations are under government oversight and continuously improved, the infrastructure and security are in place, and the staff is well trained and efficient.  It would be good for our country to have lots more electric power generating plants not requiring oil to run. Building more nuclear power plants in the USA makes good sense, and I applaud McCain’s suggestion do so.”

“It is quite apparent that the North Hills Property Owners Association has serious problems, but all the griping doesn’t seem to be solving any of those problems. Maybe a good dose of old fashioned democracy in action would help. North Hills consists of a little more than 1500 property owners, yet at the last election only about two dozen home owners showed up. Does that suggest apathy or disillusionment or what? The election was for the five positions on the Board of Directors, and there were only five candidates! That doesn’t provide much choice, but it is my understanding that there weren’t any other concerned citizens willing to throw their hat in the ring and campaign for a position on the Board. It is much easier just to write an anonymous letter of complaint to the Observer. If we could somehow get home owners with various opinions to actually campaign on the issues that concern us, telling us in advance specifically what they intend to do if elected, we would have some real democratic choices, and I think it would result in a healthier association.”

" I would like to know why the City of Rio Rancho is competing with local business. I understand that the Santa Ana Star Event Center has to make a profit to survive, but why is the management trying to lure figure skaters and youth hockey away from Blades Ice Arena? In addition the Scorpions management want to start charging the kids to display the "Junior Scorpions" logo on their jerseys? These kid's parents already pay hundreds of dollars to have their children play and the Scorps want to charge non-profits a fee? For free advertising? "

" To The City of Rio Rancho: lately a code enforcement employee has been annoying my 85 year old father who is retired from the service, serving in both WWII and Korea, for having yard waste. Why doesn't the code enforcement employee get out of the vehicle and pitch in and clean it up? After all, if it weren't for the honorable service of my father, it's likely the code enforcement employee wouldn't today be driving around in a city vehicle. As a matter of fact, why doesn't the city make an effort to help it's older veteran citizens? "
