It's the law

The Fourth of July brings images of picnics, summertime activities and, of course, fireworks. The Rio Rancho Fire and Rescue Department and the New Mexico State Fire Marshal are asking you to have a safe and enjoyable time this year by offering you these safety tips: Read and follow the label directions. Have an adult present when handling fireworks.

DO NOT:

-Buy from a reliable fireworks vendor.

-Ignite fireworks outdoors.

-Have water handy.

-Light one firework at a time.

-Store fireworks in a cool, dry place.

-Dispose of fireworks properly.

-Use fireworks in an area clear of dry vegetation

-Re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks.

-Give fireworks to small children.

-Experiment with or attempt to make your own fireworks.

Never throw fireworks at another person.

Never carry fireworks in your pockets.

And, never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.

Remember, fireworks can be enjoyable when used properly. The City of Rio Rancho requires fireworks to display no higher than 10 feet, remain within a 6-foot radius and are no louder than a cap gun. When purchasing your fireworks, be sure the vendor is licensed and inspected. Purchasing fireworks from vendors does not always mean that they are legal for use in the City limits. Illegal fireworks will be confiscated and you may be fined.

With the lack of rain, this year has proven to be very dry and the risk of devastating wild land fires is high. Improper use of fireworks can cause dry brush to ignite and cause fast moving fires in the mesa or the Bosque. Our strongest recommendation is to take the family to a fireworks display show, where all the fireworks are handled by professionals. It is safer, a lot more enjoyable and there is no mess to clean up afterwards.
