Rio Grande Nature Center

Students entering sixth through ninth grades who want to learn about the Rio Grande Bosque are invited to join the Junior Ranger program at Rio Grande Nature Center State Park this summer. Junior Rangers learn about the three major habitats of the Rio Grande riparian ecosystem — river, bosque and pond — and conduct basic biological and chemical monitoring.

Twelve students will be accepted for each two-week session, which are scheduled now for July 7n18; and July 21nAug. 1. Rangers keep scientific and creative journals meet with scientists and park rangers and participate in habitat restoration projects. Short field trips and bike tours allow opportunities to explore the relationship between the river ecosystem and its inhabitants.

Fish are biting at Tingley

Fishing reports from the Tingley Beach Central and Children’s Ponds have been mixed. Some angler’s report good fishing, others are not as successful. The most successful fishing reports include the following tips: Catfish are taking stink bait; Bluegill are eager for worms; Trout are chasing Pistol Petes in the early morning and taking PowerBait in the afternoon; There has been very low pressure on the large mouth bass. Trout fishing in the South/Catch and Release Pond has been excellent before noon. We’ve had great reports from anglers using RS2’s, Griffiths Gnats, scuds and leeches.

Road construction

40th Street will be closed at Northern Boulevard to Huron for roadway improvements. Detours are in place and closure is expected through July 11. Road construction information is posted by the City of Rio Rancho Public Works engineering staff as it becomes available. Motorists traveling within construction zones are urged to drive with caution, observe traffic control devices and have a safe trip. Remember to always wear your seatbelt and drive the speed limit. " I cannot believe that in this day as far as science has come there is still a substantial fraction of the population that attempts to DICTATE and manipulate what truth is taught to our children. Facts are facts and only a fool would deny that evolution is a FACT. The evidence is overwhelming and only those who are predisposed to some belief system would refuse see that. The fact that the vote among the board was as close as it was is enough to have little confidence in RRPS to do the right thing on any issue. Jim Wells "
