“My comment is about the gas prices. It looks like we as Americans need to go on a diet and it looks like some people are starting to do that as I read in the paper that the sales of small cars has passed the sale of pickup trucks and SUVs. There’s another diet us as Americans need to get on n that’s a food diet. If we plan on sitting inside those little cars, we better lose weight.”

“Hey, Observer, FYI: Poll workers aren’t volunteers, we’re paid and we’re always looking for more people who are looking for people who are interested in being poll workers and working on the day of the election.”

“To the ranter who complained about the service in the fast food industry. If you don’t like it and you’re unhappy with it, don’t go. Plus the fact, those people are working, they’re not sitting, and they’re not causing trouble for anybody.”

“I’m referring to the Howard Burress, the 70-year Rotarian here that appears in the Jun 5 Observer. It’s amazing that Lia Martin, Observer editor, quotes Mr. Burress as saying things that are totally false and she doesn’t correct them. She says after the crash of 1929, Coolidge was president. Burress allegedly said that. And that President Roosevelt came to be president before World War II. True. Herbert Hoover was the president in 1928 until 1932. I really find it quite unfortunate that the … gentleman might be confused but there was no effort to correct it. That was surprising. I hope you’ll do better next time.”

(Editor’s note: For clarification, Calvin Coolidge was president from 1923-29. Though Black Sunday (Oct. 29, 1929) was the high point of the Great Depression, it began in some states as early as 1928. The Depression faded out completely by World War II, which began in 1937. With these points in mind, Mr. Burress’ comments on Coolidge’s presidency are correct. President Franklin Roosevelt was in office from 1933 to 1945, and World War II began in 1937. So, Mr. Burress’ claim that Roosevelt came to be president before WW II is also correct. Actually, Herbert Hoover ran against Al Smith in 1928 and became president in 1929 and stayed in office until 1933. What was an error in that article was that Al Smith ran against Hoover in 1932. That was my error, not Mr. Burress’ error.)

“I’m calling about an auto repair business on Southern and Nicklaus. It’s changed hands several times and I go by there every day and I’m appalled at what a junkyard lot that it’s turned into. Don’t we have any zoning people out looking? I thought there were rules how they had to keep the place looking. The other guy had it nice and clean.”

“Driving home on Rio Rancho Blvd. there was a vehicle in the next lane with a message scrawled on the back window, ‘Caution: Student driver.’ Then I noticed this student driver with his left foot resting next to the steering wheel. There was an adult sitting next to him and a child in the back. Wake up, adult, be responsible. Don’t caution other drivers when you don’t show any responsibility yourself. Why let this student driver drive this way and with a child in the back? This adult was no better than the child in the back.”

“Cable One: We recently cancelled your TV service due to rip-off high cost (monopoly), lousy selection of channels, poor service and smartass ‘service’ people. Qwest’s reputation speaks for itself,. We changed to your phone $27.95 deal because we had no choice. Now, it actually costs $5,2.95. Why? Because we don’t “bundle

and purchase your lousy TV? We’ve had ‘service’ out here several time because the phone idea (and computer), they don’t fix anything. We’ve on a ‘no call’ list, but get many calls. Why? Sometimes I’m waiting for an important call to realize the phone is dead again! It’s sad we are stuck with such a poorly run firm supported by morons at the city government.”
