Bowling classic

at Tenpins on June 7

The annual Rio Rancho Celebrity Bowling Classic will be held again at Tenpins & More bowling center on Deborah Road June 7.

Members of the Sports Advisory Council are busy gathering celebrities for the event, which benefits Special Olympics and the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce’s “Friends of Tourism.”

The entry fee is $25. Entry forms are available at the center. Check-in will begin at 9 a.m. and the event should end by noon.

That evening, the SAC will announce its Athlete of the Year at its banquet at the Hilton Garden Inn.

Former Ram Madigan

is WAC’s frosh of year

Tim Madigan of Rio Rancho, state 5A medallist last season, was recently named the Freshman of the Year in the Western Athletic Conference.

Madigan, a newcomer to the New Mexico State University golf team, finished in a tie for 20th place at the WAC championships at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose, Calif., helping the Aggies win the conference title.

Madigan, also named to the All-WAC second team, and his NMSU teammates next head to Washington for regional play, hoping to make the NCAA field for the national championship.

The Rio Rancho varsity girls tennis team defeated St. Michael’s on Tuesday, 5-3.

Three Rams won their singles matches in straight sets: No. 1 Jordan McCormick, No. 2 Miranda McCaul and No. 3 Katie Fosterling.

The Rams won No. 2 and 3 doubles matches, as McCormick-Fosterling won an 8-2 pro set and Tatiana Holme-Kylie Templeton won an 8-5 pro set.

The Rio Rancho High School boys tennis team matched the girls’ run through District 1-5A on April 24, winning all nine of its matches with Gallup.

The Rams lost only one set in capturing the singles matches, by No. 1 Ollie Jury, No. 2 Cody Gibson, No. 3 Arman Salehian, No. 4 Michael Lopez, No. 5 Chris Dils and No. 6 Marcus Trujillo. Dylan Salehian won his exhibition match, 6-1.

In doubles Gibson-Arman Salehian won 8-5, Lopez-Jury won 8-0, and Dils-James Osterlund were 9-7 winners, all in pro sets.

Junior Megan Muniz and senior Marcus Williams were recently honored as first-team picks on the All-Metro teams sponsored by the Albuquerque Journal.

Joining Williams on the Class 5A first team were Matt Billups of Los Lunas, Eric Kibi of Sandia, and Chad Adams and Xavier Blount of Highland.

Also on the girls first team were Brenna Freeze of La Cueva, Deeva Vaughn of Highland, Ebony Walker of Sandia and Skye Barnett of Cibola.

Chris Newsome, also an RRHS senior, was named to the boys third team. Senior Ashley Rhoades was a third-team member on the girls All-Metro team.

Junior golf

Chamisa Hills Country Club golf pro Erik Harp said the junior golf program is getting underway May 20, after being postponed earlier, with youngsters, including non-CHCC members, invited to show up for free instruction on Tuesday evenings.

Rio Rancho High School senior Kendra Kornrumph earned a first-place finish on the Olympic team at the recent Student Athletic Trainer Challenge in Alamogordo.

RRHS won its eighth team championship in nine years or, as Rio Rancho High School athletic trainer Melissa Loiacono said, “Eight in ’08, Dude.”

The Rams’ winning team was made up of Kornrumph, Victoria Chaplin, Jordan Lowry and James Bostian.

Chaplin also earned the third-highest individual score.

‘American Cup’

visits soccer complex

The Farmers Insurance Soccer Complex plays host to the Kohl’s U.S. Youth Soccer American Cup, the largest recreational youth soccer festival in the U.S., May 10-11. 

The New Mexico Youth Soccer uunder-7 through under-14 at the American Cup will bring together 100 teams on 10 soccer fields for the second annual soccer tournament.

The program was started in 2000 as an avenue to highlight recreational soccer players and promote fair play. 

Admission to the American Cup is free.

Cibola High School is having a baseball campo for youngsters ages 8-14 on June 2-5.

The cost of the camp is $75. The camp runs from 9 a.m. until noon each day.

Mariposa run, walk

slated for June 8

The first Mariposa Run will take place in a few weeks in the gorgeous community located off Unser Boulevard in northern Rio Rancho.

There will be 5K and 10K runs, a 5K fitness walk and a 1K kids fun run.

Youth skills clinics

set for Isotopes Park

Two skills camps are planned for boys and girls ages 5-15 at Isotopes Park, where they’ll be able to learn pitching, fielding and hitting tips from Isotopes players and the coaches.

The registration fee for the clinics, to be held July 11 and Aug. 9 (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day), is $50 per child (per session).

The fee includes instruction, an Isotopes cap, clinic certificate, post-clinic lunch, and two reserved level seat vouchers for a game.

Participants may register in person on the second floor at Isotopes Park (10-5, Mon-Fri) or by phone (222-4001).

Participants should bring their ball gloves, wear proper clothing the protective equipment, and proper footwear.

‘Patriot’ triathlon planned

The first Patriot Triathlon will be held Sept. 14 in Rio Rancho, starting and ending at the new Rio Rancho Aquatic Center on Loma Colorado Drive.

The event, which will be sanctioned by the USTA, is open to teams and individuals. It begins with a 400-yard swim (seeded by ability), followed by a 25k bike ride and a 5k run.

The entry fee is $45; the field will be limited to 400 participants.

Longtime Rio Rancho resident Andie Talmadge is organizing the event. She said information would be posted on www.fitfundamentals.com.

Additionally, she said, there will be a Jingle Bell Triathlon here on Dec. 7, using the same course as the Patriot.

The first Rio Rancho Marathon is being planned for Sept. 28. More information will be forthcoming on that event.
