Fair Share New Mexico assures delinquent taxpayers pay

SANTA FE — Gov. Bill Richardson announced that the state has collected an extra $419.5 million from delinquent taxpayers since the initiative, which he called “Fair Share New Mexico,” was put in place five years ago.

“In this taxpaying season, I want to assure the hard-working taxpayers of New Mexico that their state government is making sure that delinquent taxpayers also pay their fair share,” Richardson said. “I am committed to the philosophy of fairness, accountability and good government, and that’s what Fair Share New Mexico is all about.”

“Collecting these delinquent taxes helps to keep our state taxes down, and funds basic services such as public education, public safety and healthcare for New Mexicans,” said Tax Revenue Department Secretary Rick Homans.

Homans credited Jan Goodwin, his predecessor, for putting the program in place in 2003. The initiative required new legislation, additional employees, revamped accounting software, training, and extensive coordination with state and federal agencies.

“The Department has a responsibility to all taxpayers to pursue those individuals and businesses that do not pay their fair share,” said Phillip Salazar, Director of the Audit & Compliance Division.

April 15 is the deadline to pay state and federal income taxes.
