UNM professor awarded literary honor Dr. Paul Hutton, University of New Mexico history professor, won a Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum for his article “Silver Screen Desperado: Billy the Kid in the Movies” published in the New Mexico Historical Review, spring edition. This is Hutton’s fifth Western Heritage Award. The article also received the Ray Allen Billington Award from the Western History Association.

To celebrate National Poetry Month, the Rio Rancho Public Library is sponsoring a poetry contest for children in grades kindergarten through grade six, or ages 5 to 12, who live in Rio Rancho. Poems may be submitted at any of the libraries: Loma Colorado Main Library, Esther Bone Memorial Library and Star Heights Learning Center. Celebration Baptist Church is putting on a Health and Wellness Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the people of Rio Rancho. Everything is free. There will be public agencies representing Rio Rancho to check blood pressure and other services, as well as bouncy houses for the kids, hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks. They are pairing up with the New Mexico National Guard to collect items for an orphanage in Afghanistan. The National Guard is collecting notebooks (8 ½ x 11 inches, coil-bound), ballpoint pens, lead pencils, and manual pencil sharpeners for the orphanage. Bring your kids and items for the National Guard to contribute to the Afghanistan orphanage.

The Knights of Columbus Council 6696, located in Rio Rancho, will be conducting its annual Tootsie Roll Drive for Charity on April 11 and 12, and April 18 and 19. The Knights will be passing out free Tootsie Rolls and accepting charitable donations. All proceeds will be donated to the Rio Rancho Special Olympics program, which supports handicapped athletes in Rio Rancho, Bernalillo, Corrales and the Albuquerque West Side.

Corrales ‘Mudding
Day Weekend’
It’s that time of year, when friends and neighbors of Corrales get together to mix and apply adobe mud to the walls from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 26 and 27 to the Old San Ysidro Church, Old Church Road, and take care of other restoration details. This year, the mudding will take place on the annex building and front wall of the church. This special event is affectionately known as “Mudder’s Day Weekend.” Volunteers work together and share the experience of caring for these historic buildings. Be sure to bring the family, as there are fun jobs for all age groups. To get the job done right, training will be provided so people can learn how to properly apply the mud. In addition to “mudding,” pruning, and cleaning of the landscape will take place. Work up an appetite, and then enjoy the great lunch that’s provided by the Historical Society Docents. The Old Church is still plastered with adobe mud, as it was when it was first constructed in 1869. In spite of our relatively dry climate, the mud walls need to be re-plastered every year or so. The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra’s Pops season concludes with a salute to one of the most prolific and beloved film composers of all time, Henry Mancini. Second Annual Fashion Show and Luncheon with Fashions by Desert Designs Boutique at 11:30 a.m. on April 19 at Embassy Suites on Lomas Boulevard, west of I-25. Historical talk on Arroyo Hondo Pueblo
James B. Walker, southwest regional director and vice president of the Archaeological Conservancy will speak about the Arroyo Hondo Pueblo, a 1,000-room 14th century pueblo located just south of Sante Fe at 2 p.m. on April 20. It was partially excavated in the 1970s under the direction of Dr. Douglas Schwartz. Ownership of Arroyo Hondo Pueblo was transferred to the Archaeological Conservancy in 2003 by the School of American Research and is now dedicated as a permanent archaeological research preserve. Walter’s lecture will discuss the ecology of the region, a review of the excavation and research process, the origins of the occupants of the pueblo, the cultural history of the site, and Arroyo Hondo’s relationship to other settlements in the area. He will also present larger issues concerning 14th century ancestral pueblo archaeology. As a follow-up to this lecture, Mr. Walker will lead a field trip to Arroyo Hondo Pueblo the following Saturday on April 26. Reservations for the lecture are not required, but will be required for the field trip as participation will be limited.
The event is at Sandoval County History Society’s DeLavy House located on Edmond Road in Bernalillo, and is sponsored by the Friends of Coronado State Monument. Directions: Highway 550, slightly west of Coronado State Monument, turn north on the west edge of the Phillips 66 station onto a dirt road (Edmond Road). Follow the road to its end. After accidentally overhearing a conversation between two DEA agents at the Albuquerque airport and losing a former student in a suspicious plane crash, Nena Herrera-Cassey is unable to deny a link between the two events.
