Rio Rancho High School’s track teams’ combined points topped a four-school field Saturday on the Rams’ track, and the “traveling trophy” awarded to the winner is back in the City of Vision.

Boys coach Larry Chavez said the Rams had last won the four team event — Class 4A’s Albuquerque Academy, Moriarty and Los Alamos wound out the field — are their competition each time.

Although his boys finished second to Los Alamos, 135.5 to 126.5, his son Hilario’s girls team topped the Hilltoppers by a whopping 55 points, 155-100, to provide a suitable margin of victory.

Academy (50) was third and Moriarty (42) fourth in the boys division. Moriarty (50) was third and Academy (45) fourth in the girls’ division.

All told, seven Rams punched their tickets to the state meet in May by posting qualifying times/distances.

For the boys, Joe Miano, yet to be beaten in his premier race, won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.6 seconds.

Andrew Medina won the discus with a toss of 141-10 and qualified, as did fellow field performers Andrew Lujan and D.J. Zorn, who were second and third in the javelin with throws of 175-6 and 163 feet, respectively.

Daniel Fant, who had qualified a week earlier at the Buddy Robertson Invitational in the pole vault, repeated that effort by clearing 12-9 to win that event Saturday.

For the girls, Kim Frenz won the high jump at a qualifying leap of 5-1, Kelli Seeser was second in the pole vault (8-9) and Aisha Curry won the 200 with a state-qualifying time of 25.94.

With sprinter Thomas Trujillo off at a wedding, Larry Chavez reworked his 4x400 and medley relay teams to consist of Gizeh Ibañez, Esqui Padilla, Nathaniel Wilkins and Miano to win those events with times of 3:45.45 and 3:33.21, respectively.

Chris Newsome was a two-event winner: high jump (6-1) and 110-hurdles (15.6).

Samir Bradley was the winner in the shot put at 47-5.

The Rams boys had five runner-up finishes: Padilla in the 400 (54.33), Clint Bramlette in the 800 (2:05.9), Brad Steward in the 110-hurdles (17.01), Bradley in the discus (136-2), and by the 4x100 relay team (Ibañez, Padilla, Wilkins and Miano/44.4).

Rio Rancho notched seven third-place finishes: Ibanez in the 100 (11.16), Eric Catanach in the triple jump (37-10), Aaron Holt in the pole vault (11-9), Medina in the shot (45-9), Garrett Melugin in the 200 (23.91) and 400 (55.0), and by the 4x200 relay quartet (Steward, Malcolm Butters, Alex Garcia and Catanach/1:42.6).

Including the winning performances of Frenz and Curry, the Rams girls had six first-place finishes, including Curry in the 100 (12.67).

Katrina Trout won the pole vault (9-3), and the Rams had the fastest 4x400 (Nicole Smith, Megan Valdez, Breannah Schall and Tatiana Lucero/4:16.59) and 4x200 (Frenz, Allison Majewski, Jalissa Hunt and Chelsea Fornier/1:53.36) relay teams.

The girls had eight second-place finishes: Tamara Lementino in the 3,200 (12:35.22), Cici Cordova in the 100-hurdles (17.56), Lucero in the 400 (1:03.68), Valdez in the 800 (2:31.79),Brittany Hood in the discus (91-9½), Laura Norero in the high jump (4-9), Kelsea Hawkins in the javelin (104-10), plus the 4x100 (Diane Anderson, Curry, Majewski and Fornier/51.64) and medley (Adri Sanchez, Caress Simpson, Heather Totschek and Lementino/4:47.78) relay teams.

Smith racked up a trio of third-place finishes, coming in the triple jump (30-2½), 100-hurdles (18.83) and 300-hurdles (50.64).

Also garnering third-place finishes for RRHS were Hood in the shot (30-8½), Carol Waterman in the javelin (104-6), Fran Quintana in the pole vault (8-3), Anderson in the long jump (14-6), Schall in the 400 (1:03.72) and Tabitha Fischer in the 100 (15.21).

The Rams’ teams compete in arguably the biggest meets of the season before state on Saturday in the Duke City.

Larry Chavez said the annual Albuquerque Invitational will have a field of at least 22 schools, including virtually all the APS teams, plus squads from Gallup, Grants, Alamogordo and Clovis.

“We’re looking for a top-2 or top-3 finish,” he said. “Los Alamos will be there, as will Cibola, which is pretty good, La Cueva and Clovis — it’ll be a dogfight.”

He said Orion Murphy, a sprinter and high-jumper, has a nagging injury that kept him out of the quad last weekend and will prevent him from competing this weekend. Also, two-time state high-jump winner Marcus Williams probably will be out for the season — Chavez said there’s a 10-percent chance he’d return — after recent surgery.

Hilario Chavez also expects a finish no lower than third on Saturday.

“We’re looking for some more state qualifiers,” he said. “Our times are going down and we’re hoping for some relays to qualify. I don’t think we should be any worse than second or third.”

The boys’ meet is at Wilson Stadium. The girls compete at Mile Stadium.

Preliminary events begin at 10 a.m., with the finals starting at 1 p.m.
