The Southwest Division Champions New Mexico Scorpions are getting ready for opening weekend on Oct. 19-20 against the Laredo Bucks at the Santa Ana Star Center. Fans can now get their hands on tickets for the weekend's games and the rest of the 30 home games.

Opening weekend will feature great giveaways. The first 1,500 fans on Friday night will get a Scorpions team photo. The first 2,000 fans inside the Star Center will get a watch courtesy of Santa Ana Star Casino. On Saturday, the first 5,000 fans coming to the game will get a Scorpions magnet schedule courtesy of Responsible Gaming Association.

Mini-season ticket packages are on sale for as low as $63. When purchasing season ticket packages, each person receives special VIP parking and entrance, discounts at local establishments and a promise that no tickets will go unused.

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is looking for qualified men and women to join the next generation of conservation officers who protect and conserve the state's wildlife. Recruitment will be through Oct. 26 for trainees to fill multiple positions statewide.
The department is encouraging people with diverse educational degrees to apply for the positions. Qualifications include a degree from a four-year, accredited college, passing a physical fitness test, and successfully completing a five-month training course at the state Law Enforcement Academy. Acceptable college degrees include biology, fisheries science, wildlife science, animal science, forestry, range science, agricultural science, communications, journalism, outdoor recreation, environmental science, wildlife law enforcement, resource economics, criminal justice, ecology, natural resource management, zoology, behavioral science, social science, and others.

The Rio Rancho High School RhythAMetteS dance team is holding a clinic for kids ages 5-14 on Oct. 27.
The clinic will be held in the RRHS gym from 1-4 p.m., with registration beginning at noon.
The fee is $25 per child; it includes instruction and a T-shirt, plus a snack.
Those who participate in the clinic will perform at the RRHS varsity football game vs. West Mesa on Nov. 2.
Thunderbirds seek
interns for 2007-08
The Albuquerque Thunder-birds' administrative office is currently accepting resumes and cover letters for various internship positions for the 2007-08 season.
Interns will have an opportunity to participate in the areas of: basketball operations; marketing; graphic design; community relations; and media and public relations. They will also participate in Thunderbirds' activities around the Albuquerque region. Internships are unpaid but may be performed in exchange for college credit when applicable.

Hoopsters to learn
basketball skills
The City of Rio Rancho's Cultural Enrichment Depart-ment and Rio Rancho Public Schools, along with the Rio Rancho High School Athletic Department, have announced a new partnership to create a Youth Basketball Program in Rio Rancho.
"Little and Bigger Hoopsters" is a non-competitive basket-ball program designed for boys and girls in grades 1 and 2.
This year, state champion Rio Rancho Rams varsity boys basketball head coach Brian Smith will be coordinating instruction for the sessions. Smith and his staff will use their knowledge of basketball to teach fundamentals and skills to the youngsters, and the skills that children learn in this class can be put to use as they progress into our third- through sixth-grade basketball league.
Available class times are as follows:
Little Hoopsters (first-graders): 8-9 a.m.; 9-10 a.m. and 10-11 a.m.
Bigger Hoopsters (second-graders): 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 12:30-1:30 p.m.
All classes are co-ed.
Little and Bigger Hoopsters classes will be held on Saturdays starting Sept. 15 and running through Oct. 20 at Enchanted Hills Elementary's main gym.

Schools to compete
in new hoops league
The Cultural Enrichment and Rio Rancho Public Schools Youth Basketball League will begin in January.
This league is designed to allow boys and girls in third through sixth grades the opportunity to compete against teams from other Rio Rancho schools in the same grade level.
Each Rio Rancho elementary school will have one team each of third-, fourth- and fifth-graders. Rio Rancho middle schools will suit up two teams each of sixth-graders. Each team will play eight games versus the other teams in their own age division.

Corrales cagers
start in November
The Village of Corrales is holding registration for its 2007-08 NBA/WNBA basketball league.
Boys and girls are welcomed to play in the league, which has three age divisions: first- and second-graders, third- and fourth-graders, and fifth- and sixth-graders.
Teams will practice once each week and play one game each week. The cost is $55 per child.
The registration deadline is Nov. 2.
Volunteer coaches and officials are also sought; training will be provided.
