America's Funniest Videos isn't just for laughs: Rio Rancho family earns $2,000 for third place entry

"America's Funniest Videos" has become a staple for millions of Americans every Sunday night.

The hosts - first Bob Saget, then Daisy Fuentes and John Fugelsang, now Tom Bergeron - seem to change almost on a regular basis, but not the levity. The show's been on since 1989.

Who can hold back the chuckles at the crazy pet antics, the funny things kids do and say, zany mishaps and, seemingly by law, a conk on the head or a shot to the groin?

That's "America's Funniest Videos" for you, thanks to the video clips sent in by thousands of viewers every year.

Those watching a recent episode two weeks ago may have noticed a Rio Rancho family vying for the $10,000 first prize.

Instead, Raymond Armijo and his 6-year-old daughter, Solana, settled for third place and $2,000.

That's a lot of money for being "peed on," you'd have to agree.

Raymond is a professional photographer for Kim Jew and Solana, a first-grader at Colinas del Norte Elementary, wants to be a photographer someday. They happily accepted the check from host Tom Bergeron.

Mom, the foil of their video, wasn't there. She was suffering from the flu in early December when her husband and daughter flew to Los Angeles - Solana's first flight - to participate in the taping of the show.

Married 12 years, Raymond and Heidi Armijo said they are careful about what their daughter sees on TV. They enjoy gathering in their comfortable living room to watch wholesome shows with Solana, but there aren't very many; AFV is among them. "It's her favorite show," Heidi said.

Long-time watchers, and recent videographers -"We want to record Solana growing up," Raymond says - the family thought their video of Heidi, lying on her back on a bed and raising and lowering Solana on her feet, was something that could get on AFV.

"We call it 'the airplane,'" Solana, pretty sharp for a 6-year-old, noted.

Well, that up-and-down activity wasn't enough. What made the video perfect for AFV was when Solana tells her mom, "I've got to pee," and, as her mother lowers her for the final time and Solana sprints away, Heidi realizes Solana couldn't hold it back.

Yeah, it's not CBS sitcom funny, but AFV viewers understand that's fodder for laughs.

"Solana was, 'Yeah, send it in,'" Heidi said.

So they did, receiving numerous calls from AFV producers who ultimately decided the clip was good enough to make the show and, happily for the Armijos, one of the best three for that show.

So Raymond and Solana were jetted to L.A., boarded in the Marriott near Manhattan Beach, and wined and dined, even whisked to the studio for what became a three-hour taping via limousine. (Another first for young Solana, as was a taxi ride.)

With his wife at home, Raymond had to get Solana ready for the taping. That meant he had to curl her hair, which meant a long-distance call to the family's Northern Meadows home for "a tutorial."

At the studio, the Armijos had to watch the proceedings from the "green room," because young children are not allowed in the audience. Raymond also got some makeup before the two were sent into the studio for their shot, in which Bergeron introduces all three contestants for the prize money.

"She had no stage fright whatsoever," Raymond reported. "We were like movie stars out there. She looked really beautiful. She was so confident, she even wanted to do a cheer there."

As it turned out, they didn't get the $10,00 for first place, nor $3,000 for second.

Still, $2,000 isn't bad for peeing.

Along the way, the family learned a lot about one of their favorite shows, which seats "professional audiences" in the seats for every show. "They were all great over there," Raymond said. Bergeron, the affable host, "was terrific.

"He's the same guy you see on TV," he continued. "After the show, he came by and shook my hand. I saw him with some production guys and he said, 'That was a good show. That was fun.'"

And Raymond and Heidi learned when Solana says she's "gotta go," the kid ain't lying.

Raymond said he wasn't sure if the family will be able to capture anything else for AFV as they continue to record Solana's life, which includes being in a local Brownies troop and cheerleading.

"Only if there's accidents in the family," he joked.
